Listen for These Furnace Noises

Fall is upon us, and pretty soon you’re going to be relying on your furnace to keep you warm through the next few months. More usage means more wear on the furnace, which means a higher chance of a problem developing. If you want to keep your furnace in the best possible condition, you’re going to need to be able to recognize when it’s struggling with a problem. One of the easiest ways to do that is by listening for any strange noises. Read on to find out more.

Grinding

A grinding sound tends to indicate that your furnace air handler is malfunctioning. The air handler is the part of the system responsible for circulating air throughout the house during operation. The air handler motor uses lubricated bearings to reduce friction on the system, helping it to run more smoothly. As the bearings wear down, the friction on the air handler increases. This eventually causes a loud grinding sound during operation. If you hear this sound, call for repairs as soon as possible. The bearings need to be replaced before the air handler motor burns out.

Booming

A deep booming sound often means that your burner assembly is in need of cleaning. As the burner assembly combusts natural gas to generate heat, carbon particles will begin to build up on the jets. Eventually, this will clog the jets and prevent them from igniting on time. When the jets finally do ignite, they burn through all of the excess gas at once and create that booming sound. Having a professional clean your burner assembly should be enough to fix the problem for you.
